K’gari (Fraser Island) Family Guide

K’gari (Fraser Island) Family Guide

Whether visiting for a day trip or making a holiday out of it, world heritage listed K’gari (Fraser Island) is the epitome of Australian coastal beauty. An island made entirely of sand offers wide open beaches, pristine water and playful wildlife at every turn. To top it off, holiday resorts, campgrounds and restaurants scatter the island. Fraser Island is sure to offer a stress-free, fun-filled holiday for any family.

Accommodation on the island is in abundance, with nature on your doorstep there are several inclusive resorts, retreats, or smaller beach houses depending on your preference. No two families are alike! That's why K’Gari is the ideal family holiday destination, with never-ending beaches, natural pools, lakes, shipwrecks and rainforests! The island of sand has something for the whole family.

Eli Creek

Eli Creek is one of the most popular day activities with people of all ages. The water is warm and you can walk up the path to an entry point and swim, walk or float all the way to the end of the creek. We recommend taking some inflatables. You will see people of all ages floating down the creek. So much fun!

Lake Mckenzie

Lake McKenzie is a perched lake located in the Great Sandy National Park. The lake is located 6.2 km southeast of Kingfisher Resort. It is 1,200 metres long, up to 930 metres wide and is approximately 150 hectares in area. This is by far one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever see. The changes in the blue water colours are amazing, you could easily spend a whole day here. There are public toilets and some tables and chairs to eat around. Most people enjoy spending the day in the water and on the beautiful white sand.

Champagne Pools

Located along a 75-mile beach, the champagne pools are a collection of naturally formed rock pools on the ocean's edge. With each wave, seafoam bubbles in the air, which not only gives the champagne pools their name but creates an ocean jacuzzi! Swimming in the ocean at K’gari isn’t recommended due to its strong currents and shark and stingray population, so this makes Champagne Pools the perfect day trip for the family as it offers a safe, enclosed swimming area.

Pile Valley

If you can convince the family to leave the beach, Pile Valley is an ancient world heritage-listed rainforest at the heart of the island. Rare flora and fauna as far as the eye can see make this bushwalk a must on your trip. The shorter circuit is 100m along the boardwalk, there is also a 4km return walk through the heart of the rainforest.

75 Mile Beach

The well-known beach highway is home to many natural attractions but is also well known for its beach fishing and 4-wheel driving. Beach fishing is a year-round activity and a great alternative to swimming considering the ocean's dangerous conditions surrounding the island (except for the champagne pools).

The Pinnacles Coloured Sands

The coloured sands are not only visually outstanding but also carry a lot of cultural and historical significance. The rock and sand formations are a great place for the whole family to explore and this amazing must-see phenomenon gives its visitors a chance to see the natural history of Fraser Island through sand formations that have been in the making for hundreds of thousands of years.

Maheno Shipwreck

The Maheno shipwreck is located along 75 Mile beach and is a phenomenal relic to visit. While there are several other shipwrecks located on the coastline of the island, the Maheno is the most famous. It is a piece of Australian history and worth visiting on your trip to K’gari.

Kingfisher Bay Resort

Kingfisher Bay is the most popular resort on the island and home to many different accommodation options, perfect for families and budgets of any size! With proximity to heritage wilderness, immaculate beaches and endless outdoor activities that the whole family can enjoy.

K'gari Beach Resort

A prime location right on the east coast, K'gari Beach Resort is the ultimate base to Fraser Island and beyond. With a range of accommodation to suit every budget, their secure, dingo-fenced property, is the hub for all of your activities, day trips and fishing adventures. Stroll down to the shore and teach the kids how to cast a line, or head out to explore over 1,200km of sand tracks, with Eli Creek and Indian Head just a short cruise up the sandy highway.

K’gari is a destination that caters for all members of the family. So much to do – or not do. It is one of the best family holidays we have had. We took 3 teenagers with us and did 4WD day trips, walks, Lake Mackenzie, Eli Creek and enjoyed Kingfisher Bay Resort. If I asked the kids today where they would want to go back to this is number 1 for all 3 of them. If you want to visit k’gari, give our friendly team a call and we can put together a package that will suit your family and budget, without having to leave Australia.
